Description

Jovany Strunk, Wise One of Yz, Guardian of the 9 Secrets, is dying. He’s the last living worshiper of the god Yz, and if Jovany goes, Yz goes. That’s why the adventurers are hearing whispers in their dreams, urging them to the Hermitage of Yz.

This fantasy adventure module evokes Old School (OSR) experiences for Old School and New School players alike. OSR players will find it an authentic experience, full of vibrant NPCs, exploration, puzzles, and (possibly) challenging combat.

Designed to be system and setting-neutral, you can explore the Hermitage with any game system! Suitable for Dungeons & Dragons Fifth Edition, our own RPG Spears & Spells, and OSR games like Shadowdark and Basic Fantasy.

Plot Synopsis

Nestled high in the knees of the tall white peaks of The Spine, on the way to Helke’s Gap, is a notch valley. The cold mountain winds sigh in the tops of towering evergreens that fill the valley, in the midst of which a crystal rill splashes steeply downhill toward the Sea.

Yz is terrified, for somewhere around the tenth year of taking up the life of a hermit, Jovany had finally had enough of his god. Where once Yz had dispensed wisdom and cosmic secrets, this had turned into griping, carping, and shrewish whining. Jovany stopped listening. Jovany didn’t have a crisis of faith. He didn’t turn into an atheist, because that makes no sense. When there’s a diving being right over there, there’s no point in not believing in him; you might as well stop believing in the existence of tables. Jovany knew Yz existed and remained convinced of the god’s divinity. He just decided he didn’t like Yz very much. Or indeed at all.

Now Jovany Strunk is so old and ill that he won’t last until next spring. Yz’s power has waned to the point that he can’t produce a miracle strong enough to save his sole worshiper. Yz is terrified of the prospect of becoming a powerless, nameless spirit. Yz seeks someone to save Jovany, using his dwindling powers to enter their dreams and drive them toward the Hermitage.
